Trauma
What is Trauma?
💟 Trauma occurs when someone's general sense of safety is overwhelmed by a very large stress event or a collection of many smaller events. These stress events result in the formation of emotions and "memory files" too large to process at one time. Because the memory files are too large to process, they cause the individual to remain in a constant fight/flight/freeze state. Researchers refer to this state of large unprocessed memories and chronic tension as a "trauma imprint."
💟 Trauma is not the event itself. It's only the imprint of the event that's left behind in body, heart, and mind. When we're supporting those who are recovering, we remember that the event is no longer happening. It's OK and normal to be affected by the imprint for some time, and we should also recognize and understand what it truly is.
